CONVENTIONS OF THRILLERS

Within any thriller film/programme people normally amuse that the opening is going to mysterious and chilling. But an example of a thriller programme that doesn't really show much thriller is Dexter. This is because Dexter the protagonist shows normal day-to-day procedures e.g. shaving.

A convention that should be used within the thriller genre is to get the audience engaged and to wonder what the programme is about. Some films show the more chilling side to the genre, films like Psycho and Silence of The Lambs. From watching the opening scenes many people may feel engaged because they want to see what is going to happen. Psycho's opening is quite scary because of the use of music and wondering whether something or someone is going to pop up of the screen. Many thrillers open with the protagonists so the character can get the feel of who is being played as main character. But with psycho it shows shapes but with the mysterious music, it makes the audience feel uncomfortable because they don't know what is happening. Also the way the titles come in go with the use of sound, this could be known as an ambient sound because the audience get the feel that it is going to be thrilling.
