Dexter
In this essay I will be explaining how the programme Dexter fits into the genre of thriller. This isn’t your typical thriller opening as many other thrillers may open with symbolic items that may appear through out the film or something’s that are mysterious and will have to watch the whole film to find out what it is about. With Dexter it shows an ordinary man getting dressed for work, but there must be a twist as this fits into the thriller genre. Whilst watching the opening to Dexter you hear music which sounds Mexican which could symbolise happiness, so you feel as if this isn’t a thriller. But more into opening, it gets more interesting as Dexter (The protagonist) starts showing his everyday movements as violent, for example when shaving it shows blood. People instantly think there is going to be some form of violence within the programme so they may have to watch more of this character to find out what he is really about. But on the other hand, he is only shaving as this is apart of an everyday procedure. Then he puts a tissue over the cut, then it gets a close up of the tissue and it looks disturbing because it looks violent because blood is normally associated with killing. Most of the camera angles are close ups, I think this gives good effect as you want to see more of this character and how he is with his normal day to day procedure when going to work. As these are interesting because he makes them seem as if he is a violent person. There is also a scene where he is cutting meat, but people assume that he is cutting up a person because the meat looks large and the way he cuts it quite powerfully as if he is determined to something terrible.
You don’t seem to see the characters face as much, as the viewers are more interested in what he is doing and trying to find out what his character does a job. The lightening through out the scenes is quite dark and dull, this may give the illusion and impression that he is a dark character and he is hiding something. When Dexter puts on his t-shirt it looks as if he is suffocating someone, so from these scenes we may get the impression that he is a character with a twist just by seeing his everyday movements and how he executes them.
This character may be misjudged because of the following scenes we see through out the opening. But he may be deceiving and the viewers may want to find out more about him because they are not too clear on what he is like. Dexter links into the thriller genre because it is a mystery why this character is doing such brutal procedures in the morning. Many thrillers may consist of killers and murders but Dexter fits into the thriller genre because from the opening scenes we get the impression that there is going to be mysteries of the Dexter character. The title in this opening seems to reflect the character, as the title looks like it is symbolising blood so this may signify that the character is a powerful and murderous person.
Protagonists are always the main character within a film/programme so from opening scene we may find out a lot about them which may signify what may be determined in the following scenes after the opening scene.

Se7en
The opening to this film is different from Dexter, this is because the music is really different and it makes us feel more engaged more then more tense because the audience don't know what to expect. From the opening scenes we see a man cutting pictures up and crossing words out, this may suggest that the is a deranged character because the music and the titles that go with the music may reflect the protagonists character.
The scenes look dark and gloomy, this could show that someone is trying to hard something because it looks really mysterious and weird. It looks as if the opening scene is recorded in a police station in America. There is no dialogue in this scene and you can't see the persons face, this gives the audience the illusion that something bad could happen because its all a mystery. He then seems to cut scrapings off of his hands, this may be disturbing for the audience but then it could be significant when watching the rest of the film. He may do this because he wants to get rid of his DNA off something, this may be an interesting idea as the first scenes are set in a police station.
The titles seem to come in a with twist because the music reflects the titles coming in. When one title can up it sounded like a scream, and the opening titles look really deranged like the way they have been written. The opening scenes are quite disturbing because there are pictures there that look like dead people, and the way the music goes on it sounds as if someone is up to something and that something bad could happen.
We can't see the characters face, this makes it more interesting because it makes it more of a mystery to the audience and they can try and work out what could happen. Many people could have different solutions to what the character could be doing, but there is always a twist in thriller films, but its good to have the audience guessing in the edge of their seat because this is what makes them more engaged.

Vertigo
The opening to this film is quite tense because the music is really scary and it makes you wonder what's going to happen. There is a lady standing there and the camera does a close up of her eye, the audience may feel disturbed by this because they may feel uncomfortable because there is a person we don't personally know looking towards the camera. Its quite good how this type of thriller can get people engaged because the eye can be significant within the film because people may wonder what has the film got to do with an eye. There isn't too much mise-en-scene going on, its mainly focusing on the eye.
Once we pass the eye scene, it then goes on to shapes. This might be significant to the film, some people may get ideas that the shapes could hypnotise someone as this could fit into the thriller genre. This film was made in 1958, so the thriller genre is quite mild, there is not too much tense scenes going on.
When the opening titles are coming in, they appear in a interesting way. The eye blinks and then the name of the film appears from her eye. This is a good way to get an audience engaged because there are good special effects within the opening scenes, there are going to be good effects through out the film.
The music seems to enhance the shapes and the way it moves around. The opening scenes must always try to engage the audience so they feel tense and nervous watching the film. The opening scene doesn't really show characters that may be important through out the film, this may be engaging for the audience because they want to see who the protagonist is and other characters that are relevant.
The film Vertigo seems really mysterious and tense because the audience doesn't seem to know what is going on because we only see an eye and shapes. But then the audience could relate this later on the in the film as these items may be significant within the film.
